Where to Stay in Koh Lanta ?

Notes :

The beaches of Koh Lanta are located on the left side. It is on the left side that most tourists are staying.
Koh Lanta is a big island and less popular than the nearby touristic islands of Koh Phi Phi, Phuket and Krabi area. Therefore, the hotel prices are usually lower. Great.

Option 1 : Sala Dan Town – (Upper left side)

This is where the pier is located. You will almost certainly arrive to Koh Lanta at this location with a boat. It is very convenient to simply walk to the hotel, instead of travelling with a Taxi to other beaches.

Sala Dan is a tiny village in Koh Lanta.

The most notorious place in Sala Dan is the night market. It is small but it is the most important night market of the island.

There are a few budget hotels here and there are also some resorts on the beach.

The beach is nice at sunset, there are impressive sea tides.

Sala Dan is not the most popular area for staying, most of the tourists are staying on the beaches more to the south (Long Beach area, option 2), but it can be an excellent location if you are a solo traveler who wants a budget hotel.

I have stayed here in a budget hotel called Lanta Chaolay and I was very satisfied.

It was convenient for 1 person. Quiet, modern, clean and with a balcony. Not a romantic room in front of the sea but very convenient.

Option 2 : Klong Dao Beach + Long Beach – (Upper left side)

The upper left side of the island is the most popular area for tourists. The road (parallel to the sea) is full of restaurants. The restaurants on the road are not as dense as in Phuket, but they are more dense than at any other part of Koh Lanta, so if you want a lot of choice of restaurants, stay in this part of the island.

There are some hotels on the road, but most of the hotels are located on the beaches, near the water. These resorts have also a restaurant and sometimes also a nice swimming pool.

The beaches in this area are characterized by being long and large (unlike the beaches on the south part of the island which are in form of bays)

Note : There are more beaches in this area like “Relax Bay” or “Beautiful Beach” (after you Click, use the Map to find the desired location).

Option 3 : Klong Nin Beach area – (Middle left side)

There is here an intersection of roads and there is here a “center of activity” with many interesting restaurants.

Option 4 : Kantian Bay area – (Lower left side)

This is the most beautiful and elegant beach for staying that I have found in Koh Lanta.

The beach in form of a bay is simply beautiful and the few resorts offer a great view. The restaurants with tables on the sand are great.

Although my hotel was not located here, I stopped several times on this beach to drink a cocktail.

The road near Kantian Bay has some restaurants, so you are not dependent on the restaurant of the resort, you have some choices.

Option 5 : The Old Town – (Right side of the island)

As I mentioned before, it is the left side of Koh Lanta that has the beaches and hotels. The right side is very quiet. Still, there are a few hotels near Lanta Old Town.
The old town is one of the tourist attractions of Koh Lanta.
The town is adjacent to the sea and there is a pier. It is possible to walk on that pier.

The place is cute. There are small restaurants and cafés

and live music during the evenings.

The old town gets specially animated during feasts

If you live on this part of the island, you better have a motorbike in order to reach the more developed side of the island (the left side). It takes about 20 minutes of ride.

More places near the Old Town :

The right side of the island doesn’t have regular beaches for swimming, but it has beautiful mangrove areas and fishing areas and some bays. You can choose to stay here in a “Home Stay” and enjoy a more isolated and beautiful environment. For example near the bottom right side, near Pirate Bay.

Option 6 : Koh Lanta Noi or another remote area

Koh Lanta Noi is the part above the river and above Sala Dan town. There are no tourists here. The area is “wild”.
You can find a place to stay here, it is a special experience.
