Where to Stay in Phuket ? – Hotels

See location of the places mentioned on this page on the Maps above.

  • Note 1  : There is a difference of price (and service quality) between the high season and the rest of the year. During the high season, it is difficult to find a good room for the next day (+ unfortunately the staff at the hotels are not always behaving optimally towards guests). So reserve your room in advance during the high season. The high season in Phuket is during December, January, February and March. If you can arrive off-season, you will be a king.
  • Note 2: The beaches on this island, are located on the left side, so you will probably stay on the left side of the island. Most of the tourist activity is south of Patong, so you will probably stay on the left side, south of Patong.
  • Note 3  : You can book Hotels in Phuket with Booking.com and read opinions of travelers for each hotel.

Option 1 : Patong

See Patong on the Maps above.

The most crowded and animated beach on the island. It has a touch of Pattaya (there are girls bars on the walking street). In fact Patong is more similar to Pattaya than to the other beaches of Phuket.

Many people will say that Patong is too chaotic. Others will like the fact that it is a very animated place.

If you stay here, you will enjoy a big variety of restaurants (many Turkish and Indian restaurants) and a huge mall. If you are a solo traveler, it may be a good idea to stay here instead of on a quiet beach.

The beach itself is OK but there are more interesting beaches on the island. (The beach of Patong is definitely more beautiful than the beach at Pattaya). Patong beach is full of activity during the day, including parachutes and jet ski.

Only early in the morning Patong beach is quiet, people wake up late.

The main road of Patong (parallel to the beach) is full of hotels, but also the internal roads are interesting for the hotel. The hotel may be cheaper on an internal road and the restaurants are better.

Patong is more requested than other beaches so It is more difficult to find a room in Patong during the high season, but there are also a lot of hotels here, for all budgets.

See Hotels in Patong . After you Click, use the Map to find the desired location. Read opinions of travelers for each hotel.

Note : Kalim beach is adjacent to Patong beach, in the north (almost a walking distance). It is quiet here.

Option 2 : Phuket Old Town

See Phuket Old Town on the Maps above.

This is a cool place to stay. The small town is cute. It is one of the attraction of the island. There are many small cafés, ice-cream and shops for tourists. Korean and Chinese people adore this place.

There is one clear advantage of staying here : It is very close to the main pier of boats (Rassada pier, 4 Km) so you may decide to stay here on the last night, before taking a boat to the other islands (Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Krabi).

There is also a disadvantage for staying here : No beach (you are located on the right side of the island, where there are no beaches + the town is 4 kilometers from the sea).

During the evenings, the old town is relatively calm but there are still people walking in the center. It is definitively not Patong.

On Sunday evenings, the main street becomes a “walking street” with a night market.  It is nice.

There is a huge shopping center, 3 Km towards the left of Phuket Old Town. It is called “Central Phuket”. If you have a rented motorbike, you can easily arrive to it. It not, use a Taxi (or Taxi-App like Grab).

Note the Malika Hotel near the old town. It is modern and it has a swimming pool.

The hotel is not located exactly in the center of the town, there is a walk of about 20 minutes, but you can use the free bicycles of the hotel (or use your motorbike or a Taxi).

There is also a branch of Hop Inn hotels. This hotel is located in the center of the town. The rooms are the same in all Thailand, small but comfortable.

Option 3 : Kata Beach

See Kata Beach on the Maps above.

This beach is located 13 Km south of Patong. It is very animated here in the evening, but not in the same way as Patong (Kata beach is the second most animated beach on the island). Kata beach is more suited for families (compared to Patong). There are extremely a lot of Russians who are staying here long term or short term.

The beach itself is nice

On the main street there are many restaurants and there is also a food court

Option 4 : Karon Beach

See Karon Beach on the Maps above.

Karon beach is the continuation of Kata beach towards the north. If you travel by the beach road, you will barely see the separation between Kata and Karon because the road is full of restaurants. Kata beach is a more important touristic center than Karon beach, with more hotels.

Option 5 : Kamala Beach

See Kamala Beach on the Maps above.

Most of the activity of the island is located south of Patong and Kamala beach is located 9 Km north of Patong. Still, this is one of the most pleasant beaches on the island.

On the beach itself, there is a cute pathway with many good restaurants. It reminds a beach in Italy.

There are a lot of Russians also in Kamala beach. You can see it by the signs and menus written in Russian.

There are some luxury hotels located right on the sand

And there are also hotels on the road

Note : Surin beach is just 1 Km from Kamala Beach, towards the north.

Option 6 : Rawai Beach

See Rawai Beach on the Maps above.

We are here in the southernmost point of the island (almost). Rawai beach is a tourist attraction, there is fishing activity and seafood restaurants with view over the sea. The tides of the sea are impressive.

The south part of the island is a favorite zone for expatriates who chose to live in Phuket (Digital Nomads, for example). There are nice boulangeries and restaurants oriented to the expatriates and the quality of these restaurants is superior to those of Patong (well, the customers are not “one time customers”). The expatriates are not necessarily living on the front line of the beach, but a few kilometers inland.

There is Salsa dancing in this zone, almost every evening of the week.
There is a Starbucks coffee in Rawai beach.

Option 7 : Yanui Beach + Nai Han Beach

See Yanui Beach + Nai Han Beach on the Maps above.

Here we are at the southernmost point of Phuket. These 2 beaches are nice and there is a view point over the 2 beaches.

There are some hotels near these beaches (not too many).

Like in the case of Rawai beach : The south of the island is a favorite zone for expatriates.

See Hotels in the zone of Nai Han Beach . After you Click, use the Map to find the desired location. Read opinions of travelers for each hotel.

Option 8 : Nai-Thon Beach

See Nai-Thon Beach on the Maps above.

We are here in the extreme north of the island, left side, near the airport. It is an isolated center of life (most of the tourists are staying south of Patong).

The beach is simple and nice (also Banana beach is nearby).

There are some businesses on the road.

See Hotels in the zone of Nai-Thon Beach . After you Click, use the Map to find the desired location. Read opinions of travelers for each hotel.

Option 9 : Anywhere on the island

As I mentioned before, the main activity of Phuket is south of Patong. If for some reason you want to be far from the tourism, you can find an hotel in the north part of the island. The north left part (towards the airport), has some beaches and hotels (Nai-Thon beach, for example). The north right part has almost no tourists.
