How is Ao-Nang ?

Look at the Maps above. Ao-Nang is part of the Krabi region. Usually tourists visit in the Krabi region : Ao-Nang + Railay Beach + Krabi Town. Close to Krabi region are the islands : Koh Phi Phi, Phuket and Koh Lanta which are very touristic.

Ao-Nang is a “noisy” place. It is in big contrast with its touristic neighbors Krabi Town and Railay Beach. It is recommended to visit the 3 places in order to enjoy different aspects of Krabi.

The center of Ao-Nang is a little bit like Patong Beach in Phuket. A lot of people. A sleazy atmosphere. There is a tiny corner with girls bars, but it is not like in Patong and certainly not like in Pattaya. Ao-Nang is a place adapted for families.

The center of Ao-Nang is just 2 streets near the sea, as you can see on Map 3 above.

Near the noisy streets, there is a nice sea promenade with a nice beach

There is also a small hill to climb with monkeys, right on the beach.

There are a lot of Indian restaurants in the center of Ao-Nang, significantly more than any other type of cuisine. Even if you find an Italian restaurant, there is big chance that they also serve Indian cuisine…

But there are also some authentic European restaurants, as I describe later in the section : What to eat in Ao-Nang.

The nightlife in Ao-Nang is : animated. You will not be bored here in the evening. There are a lot of bars on the main street. Sometimes there are fire plays on the beach. There are no beach parties (like in Koh-Phi Phi or in Koh Phangan).

Ao-Nang is part of the Thai continent, it is not an island, so you may arrive to Ao-Nang also by flight or bus or train. If you arrive from a nearby island, you need a boat. See later How to arrive to Ao-Nang.

There are a lot of Hotels in Ao-Nang. The hotels are adapted to receive families with children, many of the hotels have a swimming pool. The price of the hotels may be relatively high in high season. See on the second page : Where to Stay in Ao-Nang.

As for the places to visit around Ao-Nang : Except the beach promenade and the hill with monkeys which are at a walking distance, there are tourist attractions in the area that necessitate a way of transport.

See about the attractions on Page 3 : What to Visit around Ao-Nang, Krabi. Also to be visited, of course:  Railay Beach + Krabi Town.

The Krabi area is characterized by “rock-mountains”, a little bit like in Halong Bay, Vietnam. You see these mountains when you travel between Krabi Town and Ao-Nang, for example.

Is it worth to visit Ao-Nang ?

Yes. There are 2 aspects of Ao-Nang :

  1. A busy place with a lot of hotels, people and restaurants.
  2. Nice beaches around and nice tourist attractions.

The busy aspect may not suite everyone, but it is nice that such a place exists. You should split your available days between the calm town of Krabi, the beautiful beach of Railay and the busy Ao-Nang.
Let’s not forget that for a typical tourist, the region of Krabi is only one of the stops. There are also the nearby islands of Koh Phi Phi, Phuket and Koh Lanta to visit. So, you will see a lot of beautiful places when you are in this region.

How to Arrive to Ao-Nang ?

Option 1 : By Flight

Look at the Maps above. There is an airport near the town of Krabi. This is the closest airport to Ao-Nang.
There is also an airport in Phuket and also an airport in Trang. If you prefer to land in Phuket, you will need to take a boat to Ao-Nang.

How to arrive from the Airport of Krabi to Ao-Nang Beach ?

The road distance between the 2 places is 24 Km. It takes 35 minutes of drive.

  1. Option 1  (from the airport): By Taxi or App Taxi. Except the regular Taxis, the smartphone applications Grab and Bolt function in the region of Krabi.
  2. Option 2 (from the airport) : By shared Minivan. It is very easy to reserve a place in a minivan from Ao-Nang to the airport. There is a lot of publicity for that in town. Also from the airport to Ao-Nang. The price is 150 Baht (price at the time that I am writing). At the airport, go to the official information and ask about the shared minivans, otherwise you may get wrong information from the Taxi companies around.

How to Move in Ao-Nang ?

Option 1 : By foot

Ao-Nang is a self sufficient tourist destination. You can decide to enjoy the local beaches and the local nightlife and see nothing else in the region (why ???).

Option 2 : With a rented Motorbike (or Car)

A motorbike is the best option to explore the attractions in Krabi area. The distances are relatively short. You can arrive to Krabi Town in less than 1 hour. It is easy to park the motorbike near the hotel in Ao-Nang.

The usual rental price is : 250 Baht per day for a motorbike of 125 cc (price at the time that I am writing). The motorbikes in the rental shops in Ao-Nang are in good state (if you make the effort to find a good looking motorbike) + the roads are in good conditions.

Option 3 : With a Taxi

It is not a problem to stop one. It seems that you need to negotiate the price.

Option 4 : A Smartphone App

Grab and Bolt function well in this area. It is very convenient to use it if you don’t have a motorbike.

Option 5 : With a Bus

Apparently, there is also a local bus functioning in Ao-Nang. It is cheap. Try to get information from the sign on the bus stop and maybe the vendors in the nearby shops (some of them can speak a little bit of English). Tourists usually don’t use that kind of service (tourists are renting a motorbike or using a Taxi).

Option 6 : With an Organized Tour

They will transport you to the destination.

How is the Climate in Ao-Nang, Krabi ?

Note : The climate in Phuket, Koh Phi Phi and Koh-Lanta is quite similar. Also Krabi is very similar.

Temperatures

It is hot in this zone, all year round. At day time around 31 degrees Celsius. At night around 24 degrees celsius. You better have air-conditioning in your room.

Rain

Like in all Thailand, there is also in this zone a rainy season. The rainy season here is from April to December.

  • May to November : around 250 mm rain (the month of September is very rainy, around 400 mm rain).
  • April and November : around 150 mm rain.

What to Eat in Ao-Nang ?

There are a lot (hundreds) of Indian restaurants in the center of Ao-Nang. If you are vegetarian, you should definitely have some of your meals in one of those Indian restaurants.

The fun part is that a lot of these Indian restaurants are also serving other types of cuisine, like Italian food and Sea Food. I guess every restaurant should be evaluated individually.

An authentic French restaurant with French owners is Maison de Paris. They are also a bakery but they don’t open early enough in the morning, so there is no place in Ao-Nang to eat an authentic French croissant in the morning. They have good cakes here.

There is one authentic Italian restaurant in the center of Ao-Nang. It is called Spaghetti House. In the evening, it is difficult to have a free table. The Pasta I tried was fine.

There is a Mexican restaurant called Mañana Mexican Food. From my personal judgement the owners are not from Mexican origin.

Here is the vegetarian Burrito that I ate.

Another good restaurant that serves Western food in Ao-Nang : CRU Kitchen & Bar.

There are also several McDonald’s in Ao-Nang in case you want French-fries with Ketchup.

How is the Nightlife in Ao-Nang ?

The center of Ao-Nang is very animated. You will be among a lot of people walking in the main street. There are a lot of bars, some of them with live music.

I am not sure Ao-Nang is a good place for dancing.

There are sometimes shows of fire on the beach, but it does not develop to beach parties like in Koh Phi Phi or Koh Phangan.

There is a small alley (in the center) with girls bar (a sort of red district ), but it is very small compared to what exists in the beach of Patong (Phuket) or in Pattaya.
