Attractions inside the City of Chiang Rai
You can walk to most attractions mentioned on this page.
The Night Bazaar + the Walking Street
As mentioned on the first page, in the nightlife section, the main focus of Chiang Rai, at night, is the night bazaar. A small night market with a food court. See location on a Google Map or on the Maps above.
Also : On Saturdays evenings, there is a night market on a street that becomes a “walking street”. See location on a Google Map or on the Maps above.
The Clock Tower
Constructed in 2005. In gold color. Especially beautiful at night. See location on a Google Map or on the Maps above.
Old Clock Tower + Day Market
It is the main market of Chiang Rai and it is located at a walking distance from the new clock tower. See location on a Google Map or on the Maps above.
There is here an old clock tower, in a main square. It attracts the attention.
The market is quite big, it has a covered area and an open area. There are clothes and food.
Temples in the market area
Very easy to visit these temples, because they are at a walking distance, one from the other. Free entrance.
Wat Ming Muang
The most beautiful temple in the area. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
The temple exists since the early days of Chiang Rai
The interior is also very beautiful. Art and Pictures.
In the evening, the temple is very nicely illuminated.
Darulaman Mosque
It is a few steps, from Wat Ming Muang, so take a look at the facade. It is a mixture of Chinese and Islamic architecture. Exists since 2009. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
Wat Mung Muang
Located in the middle of the market. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
There is a nice Buddha outside
It is very nice that each Buddhist temple is different from the others.
Wat Phra Kaew
Located a little bit above the market. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
This temple has some history. It is especially known for an emerald Buddha, a very beautiful green Buddha that was sitting here. But it is not here anymore, it was taken to Bangkok a long time ago (it is now in Bangkok).
The place is a sort of school for Buddhism. You can be initiated to Buddhism in special sessions. Apparently, you can also chat with a Monk.
There is also a small museum. Free entrance.
It is nice inside, but it is just 1 room with 2 floors.
Unless you want to learn Buddhism, this is a short visit
Wat Phra Sing
Located a few steps from Wat Phra Kaew. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
Wat Klang Wiang
Located more to the right. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
The temple was built in 1432
The interior is nice
There are several structures
75 Anniversary Flag and Lamp Park
A small flower park. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
These sorts of parks are always more interesting when there is a flower festival, on some dates during the year.
But even without a flower festival, it is nice to make a short walk in the park
A lot of workers are needed in order to maintain flower parks.
Hilltribe Museum
Located in front of the 75 Anniversary Flag and Lamp Park. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
The museum is located at the third floor of the building. It is about the tribes that lives in the north of Thailand. Tribes like : Akha, Lahu, Yao, Karen, Lisu and Hmong.
King Mangrai Monument
Phaya Mengrai was the 25th king of the Lua Changkharat Dynasty. He lived in the years 1239 to 1311. He has played an important role in the creation of the city of Chiang Rai.
The monument stands on an important intersection of roads. See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
You can arrive here by foot, but it is relatively far from the clock tower.
Old Airport area
The old airport was quite close to the center of the city. Just 3 Km from the night Bazaar. Now it is a popular place in the evening, for sport and for drinking a juice.
See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
Shopping Mall – Central Chiang Rai
A big contrast to the rest of Chiang Rai. If you want a very modern environment, come to this huge shopping mall. Many shops, restaurants and a good parking for the motorbike. There are also great massage chairs at the top floor.
See location on a Google Map or on the Interactive Map above.
