The Thai Islands – Which Island to Visit in Thailand ? Where to Stay and how to Arrive

On this page :

Which Region to choose for the Islands ?

Look at the following orientation Map (click to enlarge) :

islands thailand

And at this interactive Google Map :

There are mainly 3 directions you can take from Bangkok :

  1. South and to the right side of the land for the Islands : Ko-SamuiKo-PhanganKo-Tao.
  2. South and to the left side of the land for the Islands and Beaches: Ko Phi PhiPhuket islandKo LantaRailey Beach KrabiAo Nang Krabi.
  3. East towards Cambodia for the Islands of Ko-Chang and Ko-Samet and Pattaya city.

To Which Island to Go ?

My advice : Choose one of the 3 regions I have mentioned and stay there. There is no point trying to see all the islands in 2 weeks (you want also to enjoy and anyway islands tend to resemble each other).

If you want to party a lot:

beach party thai islandVisit Ko-Phangan (Haad-Rin beach) or Ko Phi-Phi. Both have parties at night on the beach with fire plays and a lot of alcohol.
At the full moon, the party is even bigger. Ko-Phangan parties on the beach are bigger than the ones at Ko-Phi-Phi, but both are great.
Ko-Chang has a party scene at “Lonely Beach”, the backpackers area but it is small compared to Ko Phangan and Ko Phi-Phi.
Note : I am mentioning here only the beach parties, but in all the islands you will find many bars with music and alcohol, don’t worry about that.

If you want to dive and take a diving course :

Visit Ko-Tao or Ko-Phi Phi, both are known for the developed diving activity and diving schools.
If you just want snorkeling and see beautiful waters, all the islands are good.

If you are looking for a quiet place :

quiet island thailandThe islands that I am mentioning here are very touristic but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have quiet beaches. In every island there are resorts and beaches that are peaceful and isolated. Even in Ko-Phangan which is known for its full moon parties, most of the island is very calm and only one of its many beaches is dedicated to the backpacker’s scene (Haad-Rin beach).
If you want a quiet atmosphere for all the island, go to Ko-Lanta.
Also Ko-Chang brings a lot of peace.
If you want an isolated island with almost no tourists, no nightlife and no ATM machines (like what you see on the picture), then you can go first to one of the islands mentioned on this page and then take a boat to a smaller island. For instance, if you are in Koh-Chang, you can take a boat to Ko-Mak or Ko-Kut (There are hundreds of islands in Thailand).

If you are looking for a non expensive place :

quiet island thailandAll islands have also cheap accommodation in form of Bungalows or buildings.
Avoid the very tiny touristic places where there is almost no choices in the accommodation or food like in Railay beach.
Ko-Phi-Phi is an expensive island but still, there are also cheap bungalows and dormitories.
If you want to feel king, go in low season or at the limit of low season.

If you are preoccupied about the rain  :

Jump to : When to go to the Islands

If you don’t want to travel a lot from Bangkok :

Consider the small island of Ko-Samet. It is just about 200 Km from Bangkok. A little bit farther, in the same direction is Ko-Chang, a much bigger island and more recommended.
It takes about 4 hours of bus to reach Ko-Samet and 8 hours to reach Ko-Chang.
The other islands in the south of Thailand (area 1 and 2) require more than 12 hours of bus or train (or a short flight). See how to arrive to the islands.

Ko-Phi-Phi

ko phi phi map island thailandNote : There is a separate page about Koh-Phi Phi, with a lot of Info.

A small island, very, very touristic. It is famous because of the movie “The Beach” that was filmed in one of the nearby islands. Ko-Phi Phi is very beautiful, especially when you take an organized day trip on a boat to the nearby islands. The problem with Ko-Phi Phi is that it is very touristic for its size and hotel prices are higher than elsewhere. There are no roads in Ko-Phi-Phi, you have to walk. There are many diving schools.

Where to Stay In Ko-Phi-Phi ?

ko phangan map island thailandIt depends if you want to stay in the “center” or in a remote place on the island. The luxury residents are usually not in the center and you have to take a boat (provided by the hotel) to reach them.
The center is the 2 opposite beaches that you can see in the following satellite map. In the Center there are many restaurants, nightlife (beach parties with fire shows, each night) and the central pier.

Ko Lanta

ko lanta map island thailandA relatively big island. It has a quiet atmosphere because of the large Muslim population, it is not a place for full moon parties, but don’t worry, there is alcohol and bars. The beaches are beautiful. Nice Mangrove area and also diving activity.
At the south of the island there is a National Park with many monkeys living happily.
At the north of the island there is the main town of the island, called Saladan, It is where you arrive with the boat.

Ko-Chang

Note : There is a separate page about Koh-Chang, with a lot of Info.

ko chang island thailand

A big island. Tourism here was not developed till not long ago but now it is a popular destination. It is a pleasant island with a little bit of everything and it is not far from Bangkok compared to the islands of the south (It takes about 6 hours by bus).
One side of Ko-Chang is much more populated than the other. There are two roads (they don’t make a circle). The most touristic beach is called White Sand, with many hotels and shops on the road. Another area which is very nice is called Kai Bae, it has many good western restaurants (Mexican, Italian, Indian…). Ko Chang ThailandMore to the south there is Lonely Beach which is a backpacker’s area. It has beach parties but not as big as in Ko-Phangan or Ko-Phi-Phi.
On the other side of the island, the less developed, there is a very good semi vegetarian restaurant in a health resort, it is called Radiance.
There is also a Mangroves area to visit on this side of the island. Very Nice.

Pattaya City

pattaya map thailandPattaya is not comparable to the islands but I’m mentioning it because it is situated half way between Bangkok and Ko-Chang, so you may decide to visit.
Pattaya is the second largest city of Thailand (after Bangkok). Unlike Bangkok, it is right on the sea so there are beaches but they are not as nice as the ones on the islands. Pattaya is known for its sex activity, go to visit and you will see a very special place on earth.
pattaya map thailandFrom Pattaya you can do a one day trip to a nearby small island called Ko-Larn. It takes around half hour with the regular boat or 10 minutes with a speed boat. The water is very nice in the beaches of Ko-Larn.
Pattaya is one of those fun cities that make you spend a lot of money and I’m not talking only about the Go-Go bars. There are speed boats and parachutes towed by speed boats and water parks and motorbikes and big commercial centers and cinemas in 3D. The only way I can think to limit your spending is by entering one of these places that do Foot Massage and stay there 24 hours a day, like this you are sure to spend only 200 Baht per hour.
Overall, Pattaya is an interesting city, especially if you are a sociologist.

Ko-Samet

ko samet island thailandThis island is good in two things :

  1. It is relatively close to Bangkok.
  2. It is known as one of the driest islands.

Ko-Samet is about 200 Km from Bangkok and is known as the “beach of Bangkok”. It takes about 4 hours to reach it by bus.
Locals use to visit Ko-Samet on week-ends and prices are a little bit higher than in other islands.
Ko-Samet gets less rainfall than other islands and the rainy season is shorter (from May to July) so consider to choose this island during the rainy season.
It is a small island and it is also not far from the mainland, you can clearly see the shore and some buildings.
Most of the restaurants in Ko-Samet serve exclusively Thai food, so if you are Vegetarian like me, bring with you : almonds, nuts and other means of survival.
ko samet island thailandFor all humans : bring with you something to read or a device that connects to the Internet. The beaches are OK, but the overall experience as an island is less interesting, there are no elephants, no monkeys (chicken, a lot), not enough roads to ride a motobike, no mangrove areas and the food is less interesting.
Putting the rain issue aside, I would not recommend this particular island for your first visit in Thailand.

How to Go from Bangkok to the Islands ?

From Bangkok to region 1 (Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Ko Tao)

See this Map. Click to enlarge :

islands thailand

By Air: There is an airport at Ko-Samui. Alternatively you can fly to Surat-Thani or Chumphon and then take a bus and ferry.

By Train : The cool way to arrive to the islands. You can arrive with the train to Surat-Thani and then a bus+ferry to Ko-Samui, Ko-Phangan and Ko-tao.
You can also get down with the train at Chumphon and then take a bus and a speed boat to Ko-Tao.
You can take from Bangkok a night train in a sleeping coach, it is a nice experience. The trains are clean and comfortable and there is a restaurant wagon to drink a beer. The night train costs around 1000 baht and some tickets include also the bus and boat to the island. You can buy the ticket at the train station or at a travel agency (with a small commission) or via the website 12Go Asia (you will need to collect the train ticket from their offices). Night trains tend to get full, so reserve in advance. There is a price difference between air-conditioned wagons and not, between second class and first class and if your bed is upper or lower. The second class air conditioned wagon is really fine and also the non air-conditioned wagons with fans. You can read more about the trains in Thailand in the excellent site seat61.
By Bus : Buses can be cheaper than trains, but much less fun in my opinion. There are night buses from private companies picking up travellers from the hotels, you can buy the ticket at the travel agencies or via the website 12Go Asia (you get an eTicket by email). Alternatively, you can take a bus from the Central Bus Station Sai Tai, the station for south destinations (see location on Map).

From Bangkok to region 2 (Ko Phi Phi, Phuket island, Ko Lanta, Krabi province, Railey Beach, Ao Nang town)

See this Map. Click to enlarge :

islands thailand

By Air: There is an airport in Phuket and there is one in Krabi city.

By Train : You can arrive with the train to Surat-Thani and then a bus+ferry  to your destination. See what I wrote about the train in the previous region.

  • You can buy a train ticket to this region via the website 12Go Asia (you will need to collect the train ticket from their offices).

By Bus : See what I wrote about the bus in the previous region.

From Bangkok to region 3 (Ko Samet, Ko Chang and Pattaya city)

See this Map. Click to enlarge :

islands thailand

By Air to region 3 :
For Ko-Chang: there is an airport in Trat, then you have to take a short ride in minibus and ferry to the island.

For Pattaya city : It is too close to Bangkok for a flight (less than 2 hours by bus).
For Ko-Samet : It is too close to Bangkok for a flight.

By Bus to region 3 :
For Ko-Chang: You can take a bus or minibus from the eastern central bus station in Bangkok, called Ekkamai (see location on Map) till the city of Trat. From Trat it’s easy to reach the island with a public taxi and ferry. The buses leave at a frequency of every hour.
There are also buses operated by private companies, picking up travellers from the hotels, you can buy the ticket at the travel agencies.

For Pattaya city : Same as for Ko-Chang (from Ekkamai or private companies) . The frequency of the buses is higher than for Ko-Chang and no need to change for a boat.

For Ko-Samet : Same as for Pattaya.

By Train to region 3:
No trains to this region.

When to Go to the Islands ?

The problem may not be with the cold but with the rain. There are two main seasons in Thailand and it applies also to the islands. The dry season from November to May and the rainy season from June to October. When it rains on an island it can get boring for you as a tourist because there are no really big commercial centers like the famous Siam Paragon and Central World of Bangkok, on the other hand the Internet reception is quite good and the hotel prices are lower.
It is said that the best option for the rainy season is region 1 (Ko-SamuiKo PhanganKo-Tao).
Ko-Chang (in region 3 on this page) is bad regarding the rain.
Ko-Samet is a small island close to Bangkok and is supposed to be the best during the rainy season.
Remember also that rain is quite unpredictable on an island.

Things to Do in the Thai islands

Take an organized Boat Trip for one day

organized boat trip thai islandsThis is cool and not expensive. They take you visit something like 4 nearby small islands. The boat stops at each place and you can do snorkeling. They give you lunch and coffee and fruits and the snorkeling equipment. It usually includes the pick-up from your hotel. Highly recommended. There is a slight difference of price between the agencies that sell these tickets, so make your checking.

Rent a Scooter

motobike on thai islandOn the islands that have roads, you can rent a scooter. It is much cheaper and fun than the Taxis who can get expensive in some cases.
Of course that you should know how to ride a motobike. Some roads on the islands are steep and dangerous, so be very careful, tourists tend to do accidents. Put an helmet.
Rent prices are between 200 to 300 baht per day, depending on the island and the shop. Gasoline will cost you around 50 baht a day.
See about the motorcycle licence issue in Thailand in the Transport page.

See Monkeys

monkey on thai islandThere are quite a lot of Monkeys in the islands. I am talking about small monkeys, not Gorillas or Chimpanzees.
When you will ride with the motobike, you will probably spot a monkey on the way. If there is one monkey, more will join, they are not a solitary animal.
What they expect from you is food, so try to give them something healthy like a Banana and not industrial food. The wild monkeys are not always nice, they will show you their teeth if you try to touch them.

See Elephants

elephant on Thai islandOn the big islands, there may be elephants to ride. The elephants are not native to the islands but were brought for the tourists, I even saw one on a beach.

Visit Mangroves

Mangroves on thai islandMangroves are a type of trees with roots above ground.
At certain locations on the Thai islands, there are fishing villages in Mangroves areas. It is a very special environment and the photos to take are great.
You can take a guided Kayak tour or just look at the canals from a wooden dock. There are a lot of crabs and shells at sunset.

Climb mountains, Visit Waterfalls and Caves

Islands have beaches and mountains…

Take a Diving course

All islands have diving schools, especially in Ko-Tao and Ko-Phi-Phi.
For most humans, snorkeling may be enough.
