Where to Stay in Barcelona ?
If you don't know Barcelona and you have no idea in which zone to stay, this page is for you.
First, you should realize that Barcelona is one of those European cities where you can walk during hours in the beautiful animated streets and just enjoy the view. I mean that your hotel could be anywhere in one of the central zones and it will be good, because the center of Barcelona is compact, animated and interconnected.
The center and animated part of Barcelona is : La Rambla, plaza Cataluña, el Gótico, el Raval, Born and Barceloneta (beach). In these zones you may not need to take the metro at all, most of the times.
Other zones are also OK as the metro service and buses in Barcelona is very good and there are also night buses. For Hostels, see later on.

See also Barcelona Interactive maps in the Maps page.
La RamblaAdvantage of this location: The most central and animated street, "the Champs-Elysees" of Barcelona. It is near everything, but it is quite a long street...from plaza Cataluña to the port.
See Hotels around La Rambla avenue and read opinion of travellers.
Plaza de Cataluña zone
Advantage of this location: The central square of Barcelona, the
of la Rambla street. Big shops like "el Corte Ingles", Apple store and
Fnac are right in the square. The square has the most central metro
station and the
Your hotel will probably not be in the square itself but near. It could be in plaza de la Universidad or Urquinaona or in the large and horizontal avenue Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes.

Barrio GóticoAdvantage of this location: The most beautiful neigborhood in Barcelona and the most touristic one with many churches and narrow medieval streets. The main shopping area is also here.
See Hotels in the Gótico and read opinion of travellers.
El BornAdvantage of this location: Adjacent to the Barrio Gótico and beautiful and old as well. Parc de la Ciutadela is here. A hot zone for bars at night. Also, not far from la Barceloneta, the first beach.
See Hotels in El Born and read opinion of travellers.
El RavalAdvantage of this location: El Raval is on the right side of la Rambla and central as well.
It is beautiful. Some zones are less attractive for living because of prostitution activity at night, but the neigborhood is not dangerous at all. Hotels may have lower prices and you are still a walking distance from la Rambla.
See Hotels in El Raval and read opinion of travellers.
La BarcelonetaAdvantage of this location: La Barceloneta is the first beach of Barcelona, the closest to town center. La Barceloneta is also a residential neighborhood and it has a very nice spirit at day and night. It has a metro station. You can walk 10 minutes to El Born, 15 minutes to Barrio Gótico, 20 minutes to la Rambla. There are not a lot of Hotels in the Barceloneta itself, there are more flats to rent for longer stays.
See Hotels at the Barceloneta zone and read opinion of travellers.
Plaza de EspañaAdvantage of this location: This square is not in the center town but also not far, just 4 metro stations from plaza Cataluña, you can even walk that distance (about 30 minutes).
The square is nice with the beginning of the Montjuic hill and the magic fountains at night. It has also the nice mall "Arenas", built on an old toro stadium. The airport bus has a stop in plaza de España. The main railway station "Sants" is also not far. Of course that hotels are less expensive in this area compared to "El Gótico".

Gracia neighborhoodAdvantage of this location: It is a nice neighborhood with student spirit, especially at night. many nice squares and little restaurants.
It is 3 metro stations north from plaza Cataluña, a walk would take 30 minutes. It is also relatively not far from park Guell, the Gaudi Gardens.

Anywhere in BarcelonaYour hotel could be anywhere in Barcelona. You may prefer to get better hotel prices and just travel a little bit with the metro or bus. The metro service in Barcelona is very good, it is reliable and it comes in high frecuency.
At night there are special lines of buses (N1, N2...) they start from plaza Cataluña.
You could stay for example near the beaches that are after la Barceloneta, in the quite neigborhood Poblenou or even farther. You could stay near la Sagrada Familia. There is always a metro or bus that reach La Rambla...

One famous hostel is St Christopher's Inn which is quite big and almost on Cataluña square itself. Another chain is Sant Jordi (here in the photo), they have several hostels in Barcelona.
If you are looking for an individual cheap room, not dormitory, these places are usually called "Pension" in Barcelona or "Hostal" or "Hostel" or "Guest House". There are quite a lot of them in the center zones : Gotico, Born and Raval. For example : Guesthouse Barcelona Gotic .
