Bangkok - How to Go from the Airport of Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to the City Center and to other zones.

star For Don Muang Airport, see at the bottom of the page.

Notes :
  • The best way to arrive from the airport Suvarnabhumi to town center is with the Airport Train, called Airport Rail Link (read details). Buses are not really an option (from when the train exists). There are buses going from a bus terminal which is close to the airport and that can be reached with a free bus shuttle but the destinations are mainly for the suburbs of Bangkok, so the train is the public transport to use to reach Bangkok Center. The train station at the airport is located at the lowest floor.
  • Taxis are another option to reach Bangkok center. There is one central point to get on a Taxi at the airport. Taxis use to take extra charges from the airport (like luggage and whatever they invent) so the price gets to around 500 baht instead of 300 baht that you can get in the other direction. It takes less than 1 hour drive to reach Bangkok center with a Taxi, when there is no traffic jam. Read more about Taxis in Bangkok and about Taxi scams (don't panic, everything is fine).

How to get from the Airport To...

1. From Bangkok Airport to Siam and Chitlom area (town center), the big malls area : MBK, Siam and Central World malls.

  • By Taxi  : Less than 1 hour drive, around 500 baht.
  • By Airport Train + Skytrain : Get on the airport-train and get down at the last station called Phaya Thai (see Map at the top of the page), then take the skytrain (direction Bearing) and get down at the station Siam (for the malls Siam, MBK) or at the station Chitlom (for the mall Central World)

1.1. From Bangkok Airport to Pratunam area (town center), wholesale market area, Fashion mall, Computer mall, Bayoke tower hotel.

  • By Taxi  : Less than 1 hour drive, around 500 baht.
  • By Airport Train : Get on the airport-train and get down at the station called called Ratchaprarop (see Map at the top of the page), then just walk to Pratunam area.

2. From Bangkok Airport to Sukhumvit street area, Nana and Asok zone

  • By Taxi  : Less than 1 hour drive, around 500 baht.
  • By Airport Train + MRT (subway) : Get on the airport-train and get down at the station called Makassan (see Map at the top of the page), then take the MRT (Metro) (you will need to get out of the station) and get down at the station Sukhumvit (called also Asok, for the skytrain). You can switch to the skytrain if you want to go to Nana area. Of course that you can take a Taxi or Tuk-Tuk from Makassan station instead of the Metro, it is a short ride.

3. From Bangkok Airport to the Khaosan Road -The Backpacker's zone

See this in the Khaosan Transport page.

3.1 From Bangkok Airport to the Big Palace and Wat Pho (the reclining Buddha)

Look at the following map, click to enlarge :
big palace area
The Big Palace is close to the Khaosan Road, the backpacker's zone (about 1 Km distance). The skytrain doesn't reach this part of town, so the best way to arrive is to take the airport-train till the last station Phaya Thai and then a Taxi. See How to arrive from the Airport to the Khaosan road for all the options.

4. From Bangkok Airport to the Chao Phraya river

  • By Taxi  : Less than 1 hour drive, around 500 baht.
  • By Airport Train + MRT (subway) or Skytrain :
It depends which part of the river you want to reach. See the Chao Phraya river transport page to get an idea about the (boat) piers along the river.
You may need to take a short ride with a Taxi (or Tuk-Tuk) for the final part of the journey, because the skytrain or Metro don't reach the river (except at pier 0). You may use the river boat transport to move along the river, although it may be difficult with suitcases and when the boats are crowded (almost, always).
  • If you need to reach the upper part of the river (around pier 13), you can arrive like for the Khaosan road (the airport-train till the last station, Phaya Thai, then a Taxi).
  • If you need to reach the middle part of the river (around pier 5), you can arrive like for China Town. The MRT (metro) station in China Town (Hua Lamphong) is about half hour walk from the river.
  • If you need to reach the lower part of the river (around pier 0), you can : Get on the airport-train and get down at the last station called Phaya Thai (see Map at the top of the page), then take the skytrain (direction Bearing) get down at station Siam and change lines to direction Bang-Wa and get down at station Saphan Taksin. This is the pier number 0 on the river.

5. From Bangkok Airport to Silom area - Pat Pong area

  • By Taxi  : Less than 1 hour drive, around 500 baht.
  • By Airport Train + MRT (subway) : Get on the airport-train and get down at the station called Makassan (see Map at the top of the page), then take the MRT (Metro) (you will need to get out of the station) and get down at the station Silom.

6. From Bangkok Airport to China Town

  • By Taxi  : Less than 1 hour drive, around 500 baht.
  • By Airport Train + MRT (subway) : Get on the airport-train and get down at the station called Makassan (see Map at the top of the page), then take the MRT (Metro) (you will need to get out of the station) and get down at the (last) station Hua Lamphong.

How to Go from the Airport Don Muang of Bangkok to the City Center and to other zones

This airport is located 22 Km to the north of center Bangkok (see it in the Maps page). This airport is mainly a domestic airport. It is located at about the same distance from the city center as the main Airport Suvarnabhumi (Suvarnabhumi is at the east of Bangkok), so Taxi fares should be about the same. There is NOT an airport-train (nor Metro or Skytrain) to Don Muang airport, like there is for the main international airport Suvarnabhumi (A skytrain line is being built at these moments).
The options to get to town center :
  • By Taxi : About 500 Baht from the airport to town, 1 hour drive. At the other direction, from town to the airport with taxi-meter it could be 250 Baht (the difference is due to extra charges from the airport).
  • By Airport Bus : There is a high frecuency bus A1, that goes to the nearest skytrain station Mochit (also a Metro-MRT station called Chatuchak). The skytrain doesn't operate at night in Bangkok (only till midnight).
  • By private Bus company : There is a private bus company called Limobus, they have a direct bus every hour to the Khaosan road, Silom (Pat-Pong) and Chidlom (Siam). Look at their website for details.
  • By regular buses : There are some lines to different locations in Bangkok. One of the buses is number 59 that operates also at night and stops at : Victory Monument (the suburban bus station of Bangkok), Phaya Thai (the train link to Suvarnabhumi airport) and Khaosan area (the backpacker's zone of Bangkok).
  • By old train : The airport is located near a regular train station where there are trains passing here on their way to the main train station of Bangkok Hua Lamphong, but this way of transport is complicated for going to town center.
You can see more Bus lines from the airport Don Muang to town center on the site Transit Bangkok.
To arrive to the Khaosan area, see this page.
